Canwood Gallery: Contemporary Art in the Herefordshire Countryside
The Running Man
What is Canwood?
Canwood Gallery is a private contemporary art gallery and sculpture park set in rolling Herefordshire countryside. It offers a rare opportunity to see large-scale modern sculpture displayed outdoors, carefully positioned within landscaped meadows and former farmland.
Why did it come about?
The gallery was created by local landowner and art collector Stephen Dale, whose long-standing interest in contemporary art led him to transform the land surrounding his home into a space for public enjoyment. Rather than a formal museum setting, Canwood is designed to allow artworks and landscape to work together, giving each piece room, scale and context.
What will we see there?
Visitors can explore a series of outdoor sculptures set along gentle walking routes, with works appearing gradually across the grounds. The collection is eclectic, featuring both established and emerging artists, and is curated to encourage open-ended viewing rather than a prescribed route or interpretation.
Is it just outside?
A converted barn houses the indoor gallery, where smaller sculptures and paintings - often by important artists - are exhibited in a carefully restored historic building.
The renovation respects the character of the original structure while incorporating modern design elements, making the building itself part of the experience.
Is there anywhere to get refreshments?
There is a small tea room on site, offering drinks, snacks and seating — a welcome place to pause after exploring the sculpture park.
