The Clock Tower

A romantic, dog-friendly cottage for two on the Barton Court estate, with private outdoor space, Malvern Hills views

and an outdoor bath open to the sky.

The Cottage

A building packed with history

The Clock Tower is a bijou, brick and stone, self-catering one-bedroom cottage for two in Herefordshire on the western slopes of the Malvern Hills.

It offers privacy, character and complete escape on the Barton Court estate.

Secluded, characterful and very, very, cosy, the cottage combines antique details with modern comforts. Inside you’ll find warmth, texture and a sense of being entirely away from the world.

Surrounded by walking routes from the doorstep, The Clock Tower is ideal for couples looking for a private, self-contained stay in the Malvern Hills - whether for an anniversary, a restorative countryside weekend or simply being away together.

Set within the historic Barton Court estate in Colwall, The Clock Tower offers the intimacy of a standalone cottage with the beauty of a wider country setting. Enjoy private parking, outdoor space and easy access to the Malvern Hills, Ledbury and Great Malvern - all while retreating each evening to a space entirely your own.

BATHING UNDER THE STARS

An outdoor bath with uninterrupted views of the Malvern Hills

On the private decking sits a double-ended outdoor bath - wide enough for two, positioned so you face each other with the Malvern Hills stretching out in front of you.

The view is uninterrupted: the walled garden in the foreground, the hills beyond, and nothing between you and the skyline. Run it at dusk and stay in long after the hills have gone dark.

Stargazing

No light pollution. Just the sky.

Barton Court sits in some of the darkest countryside in the Midlands.

On a clear night, the sky here is big, dark and crowded with constellations twinkling brightly, easily visible. Sometimes you can even see the Aurora Borealis. No need to go to Norway!

The decking and the outdoor bath face east. After dark, once the hills have disappeared into the black, the stars take over.

Bring a blanket. Stay longer than you planned.

Four legged friends

This cottage was built for dogs. Yours is very welcome.

The Clock Tower has always been a working dog's home. Built into the original fabric of the cottage is a secure kennel run - accessed from the ground floor, fenced with the same cast iron railings as the ferret cages that also form part of the cottage.

Your dog can come and go through their own door.

Beneath the building, still in place, is a Victorian hound wash - no longer in use, but a good indication of how seriously dogs were taken here.

The Malvern Hills are on the doorstep. The estate grounds are there to be explored. For dogs, this is a very good place to be.

✦ Secure kennel run with dog door from the cottage

The Sitting Room

You step straight into the sitting room from the front door where a large inglenook fireplace with a log burner dominates the room.

Two linen covered sofas face each other across an antique French coffee table, and a circular table sits under the window with two chairs - for supper, cards, or the board game you brought and will probably argue over.

In a tall cupboard to one side of the room is the pendulum of the great clock, still swinging. A reading nook built into the stairs gives you somewhere to put your feet up and read a book.

The Kitchen and Garden

You may not want to cook while you are on holiday. Or, if you do, you want it to be as quick and painless as possible.

Alternatively, you may find cooking therapeutic so that an essential part of your break away is spending time in the kitchen.

Either way, the galley kitchen in the Clock Tower has everything you need from an air fryer to a microwave, a full oven to a dishwasher.

It may look vintage with its maple worktops and butler’s sink but it is fully functional.

Outside, roses, scented flowers and herbs surround a table and two chairs. A gate in the garden wall leads through to the decking and the bath beyond.

The Bedroom

Upstairs, is the same nordic blue, now paired with white linen blinds edged in pink and white Vichy check - the same fabric used to upholster the antique French sleigh bed.

Small cottage windows look east over the walled garden to the Malverns, and west up the drive.

High up in the eaves, in its own housing, is the clock mechanism - cogs, weights and counterbalances - all still in place above the bed. We no longer wind it (impossible to sleep with the chimes) but it is a remarkable thing to have experience of.

Off the bedroom, a small room houses a water-saving loo - the basin sits on top of the cistern, its waste water used to flush.
