Known for its historic streets, full of black and white timbered buildings, it has an independent spirit and has become a place where design, craftsmanship and history sit comfortably side by side.

Compact and easy to explore on foot, Ledbury makes an ideal half-day visit — unhurried, characterful and refreshingly original.

The Painted Room: a hidden Elizabethan treasure

Tucked away behind an unassuming frontage lies one of Ledbury’s most remarkable discoveries: The Painted Room.

This extraordinary Elizabethan interior, revealed beneath layers of plaster, is lavishly decorated with rare 16th-century wall paintings depicting classical figures and symbolic scenes. The original purpose of the room is unclear. Too many records have been lost to make an accurate prediction but certain features indicate that it may have been a court room. In any event, the wall paintings are remarkable: still fresh after all this time and with an unexpected contemporary feel, they are well worth a look. The room is looked after by enthusiastic volunteers who take great pride in telling visitors all about it.

Visiting the Painted Room offers a rare glimpse into domestic life and artistic expression from over 400 years ago — intimate, atmospheric and utterly unexpected.

Independent design & beautifully curated shops

Ledbury has become a destination for those who appreciate thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship. Shops such as Roger Oates Design, known for its distinctive stair runners and textiles, sit alongside carefully curated interiors and lifestyle stores. Their showroom is in an architect designed building situated at the end of a medieval alleyway off the high street. It is worth going just to see this interesting glass construct.

* side note: If you are staying at Barton Court you will see one of the famous runners on the back stairs.

Tinsmiths offers a refined edit of mostly British-made homeware and gifts - very stylish and artisan led. Along the high street up another of the town’s quaint cobbled alleyways, Hus & Hem brings a Scandinavian sensibility to furniture, lighting and everyday objects.

Together, they give Ledbury a quietly stylish character, shaped by quality, craftsmanship and careful curation.
